Traditional Saunas & Infrared Saunas Compared

Saunas have been used for centuries, as they promote relaxation, detoxification, and improved health.

Those treating themselves to a relaxing spa treatment often include a trip to the sauna. Saunas have been around for centuries. They have lasted because they provide a great way to relax, detox, and improve your health. Many gyms, spas, and resorts today continue to use traditional saunas. However, there is a new type of sauna: the infrared sauna. What is an infrared sauna, and how is it different from traditional saunas, you may ask?

Different Types of Saunas

Dry Saunas

Dry saunas, which are very common, are likely what you think of when you hear the word “sauna.” Dry saunas use electricity, gas, or wood to heat air in an enclosed space. Dry saunas sometimes also have hot sauna rocks to keep the air warm. Humidity can be achieved by splashing some water on the rocks.

Typically, dry saunas range between 158°F and 212°F. As this is a very hot environment, you should always use dry saunas with caution. Talk to your doctor before using a sauna if you have heart issues. Also, keep yourself hydrated before, during, and after using a sauna. Using a dry sauna regularly can provide a number of health benefits, including improved skin, improved exercise performance, reduced asthma symptoms, and more. (1)

Wet Saunas

Wet saunas, which are also referred to as steam rooms or steam saunas, generate wet heat. Despite the name, a wet sauna isn’t a typical sauna, as most saunas use dry heat. Wet saunas create a hot, humid environment through the use of a generator of boiling water. (2)

Wet saunas typically stay between 110°F and 114°F. Some people find the humid air harder to breathe than the air in a dry sauna. Keep in mind that because wet saunas cause you to sweat a lot, it is very important to stay hydrated. Wet saunas are beneficial for promoting clear skin, relieving congestion, loosening stiff muscles, improving circulation, and more. (2)

Infrared Saunas

Infrared saunas differ from other saunas because they use special lamps that use infrared wavelengths to heat the area. These saunas heat the body more directly without having to heat up the surrounding air. Because of this, infrared saunas range between 110°F and 125°F — a much more comfortable environment than a room that is up to 212°F!

Because infrared saunas are not as hot as other saunas, you can save on electricity, and the sauna can heat up more quickly. In addition, infrared light has been shown to be free of electromagnetic fields and are not harmful to human tissue. (3)

Infrared saunas use long wavelengths of light that are invisible to the eye but that your body can absorb. (4) The body can absorb this energy on average one inch below the skin’s surface. (3) By warming up your body directly, infrared saunas can more quickly increase your core body temperature while the surrounding air remains cooler. (5) Because of this, your body warms up faster, you start sweating more quickly, and you experience greater benefits.

According to studies, those with chronic heart failure experience greater cardiovascular function and reduced oxidative stress if they use infrared saunas. In addition, patients with Type 2 diabetes that use infrared saunas experience less stress and fatigue. (4) Depending on what type of infrared sauna you use, you may also experience (3, 6):

  • Increased blood flow
  • Reduced inflammation
  • Decreased joint stiffness
  • Reduced muscle pain
  • Increased natural wound healing
  • And more
