Comprehensive Water Purification
Carbon Composite Filter
When your tap water flows through our water machine, it first comes in contact with our Carbon Composite Filter. This is a more durable version of a carbon filter because it contains activated carbon as well as other materials to increase the lifespan and enhance filtration.
This filter effectively removes:
- Coarse particulates
- Sludge
- Colloids
- Suspended matter
- Chemical contaminants
- VOCs
- Pesticides
- Herbicides
Through a process known as “adsorption,” contaminants adhere onto the surface of the carbon and then become trapped in the porous material. Trapping and removing these pollutants not only removes these health-harming substances but also improves the taste and smell of the water [3].
Reverse Osmosis Membrane Filter
The second phase of our filtration process is the Reverse Osmosis (RO) Membrane filter. At this point, the carbon filter has already removed a host of contaminants. Now the RO filter can do the work of removing even the tiniest of particles the carbon filter might have missed.
With RO, water is forced through a semipermeable membrane which has tiny pores (typically 0.0001 microns in size). This membrane allows water molecules to pass while trapping contaminants and impurities, filtering the water as it passes through.
The reverse osmosis filter removes:
- Bacteria
- Chlorine
- Dissolved salts and minerals
- Pharmaceuticals
- PFAS (forever chemicals)
- Heavy metals (lead, arsenic, mercury, and more)
- Fluoride
- Microplastics
In flow-through RO systems, like in the UltraLux Water Machines, water is forced through the membrane using pressure. Contaminated water flows into the filter, and the pure water passes through the membrane, leaving behind any leftover impurities. This process is called cross-flow filtration, where some water carries away the rejected contaminants, and the rest becomes purified water [4].
UV-C Light Sanitization
Even the best filters, like carbon and RO, can still miss the tiniest of microorganisms. At UltraLux we are aware of this threat, so we have included UV-C light sanitization in our Water Machines so there are no living organisms present in your water.
The inclusion of UV-C prevents any need for harmful disinfection methods for the filters, such as chlorine. UV-C light, with its specific wavelength, disrupts the DNA of bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens, rendering them unable to reproduce or cause harm [5].
